Transform Your Waist: The Power of Tummy Tucks

It's reported that nearly 140,000 tummy tucks are performed yearly in the U.S., making the procedure the sixth-most common cosmetic surgery. Often this is because tummy tucks target areas of the belly that are hard to trim down with exercise and diet alone.

Tummy tuck surgery removes excess skin and fat from the middle and lower abdomen to tighten the abdominal wall's muscle and fascia, the connective tissue in the stomach. The fascia may also be tightened with surgical sutures.

Most women who choose this procedure are in their late 30s, early 40s, or beyond. A correctly performed tummy tuck can reduce your waist size and help you regain confidence about your curves. Some patients may lose many inches off their waist, while others will see more subtly satisfying results.

Types of Tummy Tucks

Different types of tummy tucks provide different results based on your aesthetic goals and needs. Dr. Meade offers the following types of tummy tucks:

Skin-Only Tummy Tuck (Mini Abdominoplasty)

A skin-only, mini tummy tuck removes the excess, sagging skin that forms an uncomfortable pouch below the belly button. This type does not repair or tighten muscles and is best for patients who need minimal surgical restoration.

Skin-Only with Plication Tummy Tuck

This is a procedure where the excess, sagging skin is removed with added suturing to apply and maintain tension.

Standard Abdominoplasty

Standard abdominoplasty generally involves a horizontal incision from hip to hip and another around the belly button. During your procedure, local anesthesia is administered to keep you as comfortable as possible. Excess skin is removed, and the muscles are tightened for comprehensive body sculpting. This type of tummy tuck is commonly included in a Mommy Makeover.

Extended 270 Abdominoplasty

A 270-degree tummy tuck uses an incision extending around the hips to the back. This more extensive tummy tuck removes more skin and is especially suitable after extreme weight loss.

Lipoabdominoplasty

A lipoabdominoplasty can make your abdomen look fitter and better defined. In this procedure, excess fat is removed by liposuction from the middle and lower abdomen. The muscles themselves are also tightened, creating a firmer abdominal wall.

360 Abdominoplasty/Circumferential Tummy Tuck

This procedure is also commonly known as a belt lipectomy. It removes excess skin from the total circumference of the patient’s trunk.

Preparing for Tummy Tuck Surgery

Dr. Meade may ask you to:

  • Undergo further medical evaluations and laboratory testing.
  • Adjust or stop taking your current medications and dietary supplements.
  • Avoid smoking and consumption of alcohol and drugs.
  • Make sure you are well-hydrated for the procedure.

Your Consultation with Dr. Meade

At your consultation appointment, you will have a physical evaluation with Dr. Meade, and he will discuss your aesthetic surgical goals and desires. Obese or significantly overweight patients might not be candidates for tummy tucks. A Body Mass Index (BMI) over 30 could present issues. Additionally, any previous clotting or surgical complications could present an environment inhospitable to the procedure. Ensure all these conditions are discussed openly with Dr. Meade at this appointment.

Dr. Meade will also give you an idea of what to expect during surgery and throughout your recovery. You will receive a cost estimate for your custom tummy tuck, including detailed price information.

Recovery and Results

There may be some discomfort after a tummy tuck within the first week, but the pain is reported to be halved by the second week. As with most of Dr. Meade’s procedures, most patients don’t finish their initial prescription of 40 pain pills.

The results of tummy tucks are considered permanent because the skin and fat cells Dr. Meade removes during the procedure cannot grow back. Likewise, any internal sutures he places to repair the stomach muscles are designed to remain indefinitely.
